David Guerra of Saddle Brook High SchoolThe BCBSCA is an organization that celebrates the beautiful game and the people that are a part of it. We recognize all aspects of contributors, league MVPs, scholar athletes, unsung heroes and, this past year, players who are able to beat some of life’s toughest obstacles.
Ben Landel was a talented soccer player at Ramapo High School who lost his life due to a rare and aggressive cancer on January 25, 2018. From the time of his diagnosis the soccer community rallied around him and his family with support. His passing created a void that organization saw fit to fill by creating an award in his name, The Ben Landel Spirit Award. This award will be given only to a member of the soccer community who worked through a hardship of life, exhibiting the spirit Ben lived with and will not be a required annual award. This is for someone special. |
This year’s recipient was David Guerra of Saddle Brook High School. Diagnosed with leukemia in the summer before his sophomore year the outlook he faced was bleak but he made a promise to his family, friends, teammates and coaches that he would return to play. After missing his sophomore season he returned to action as a junior and was then unanimously voted a captain as a senior. Throughout those years the only times he missed anything for the team was to go through one of his treatments to continue his fight against leukemia.
The spirit of Ben will live on through the recipients of this award and he will always be a lasting part of this beautiful game.
The spirit of Ben will live on through the recipients of this award and he will always be a lasting part of this beautiful game.
